Before its introduction on 1 October 1869, the postcard was still being criticised as an ‘unbecoming form of communication on an open post sheet’. Yet it was very much in tune with the times, meeting a mass need for a simplified and quick exchange of information. Just as today, the image illustrated, complemented or decorated the message, or even replaced it.
With over 200,000 postcards, the Museum Foundation Post and Telecommunication has one of Germany’s largest postcard collections. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the postcard, this exhibition presents over 500 postcards exploring the history of this medium’s origins, development and diversity as a mirror of society.
