The museum library can look back on a long tradition starting with the Imperial Postal Museum’s collection of works on postal history and philately. The library, just like the museum, has had a turbulent history, including closures due to renovations, moves and the evacuation of the holdings. In March 2000, though, the library and its archives with a stock of around 80,000 volumes finally found a permanent home in the Leipziger Strasse museum building.
The Museum for Communication Berlin’s library collection comprises many different publications on philately, as well as on the history of the postal services and communications. The library offers access to books, newspapers, magazines and original documents (where their condition allows it), as well as audiovisual media.
The library is a specialist scholarly institution open to the general public. It is a lending library and loan material may be borrowed for up to four weeks. The reading room is furnished with study and reading desks for the reference materials, and also provides photocopying facilities.
Books and magazines are available to visitors in an open shelf area. The electronic catalogue (OPAC) facilitates the search for titles.
